The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is seeking one Food Technician to join our team at any of our main office locations for a 12-week term. To be eligible, applicants must have been enrolled in school within the past year and be returning to their studies in the fall. Preference will be given to post-secondary students.
The successful candidate will support the ENR team by assisting in food security initiatives, including the Community Freezer Program. They will support NCC’s communities in contributing to their own food sovereignty, to produce food locally, to encourage the eating of traditional country foods and promote the continuation of traditional food sharing networks.
NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit. Roles and Responsibilities for Food Technician
- Assist in the planning, preparation, and distribution of food through programs such as the Community Freezer Program.
- Support food security initiatives by helping to store, organize, and manage inventory of traditional and local food products.
- Help with the processing and packaging of country foods in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
- Participate in community events and outreach activities focused on promoting food sovereignty and traditional food practices.
- Work with the ENR (Environment and Natural Resources) team to support the coordination of food deliveries to NCC communities.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of food storage and preparation areas.
- Assist in documenting food handling procedures and reporting on inventory levels and needs.
- Engage with community members to help promote the benefits of traditional and local food consumption.
- Support educational initiatives related to nutrition, food preservation, and safe handling of country foods.
- Respect and uphold NCC’s cultural values, food traditions, and commitment to community wellness.
Skills and Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a post-secondary program in environmental science, natural resources, geography, biology, or a related field.
- Strong interest in environmental stewardship, community-based research, and Indigenous knowledge systems.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather and terrain conditions, sometimes in remote locations.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail for accurate data entry and reporting.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and protocols.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with a willingness to learn from both scientific and traditional knowledge perspectives.
- Familiarity with NunatuKavut communities, culture, and land is an asset, as is a respectful and community-centered approach to work.
- Valid driver’s license and access to transportation may be required depending on the work site.
- Solid understanding of health and safety protocols related to food storage and preparation.
