The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is accepting applications for a Park Steward for the Akami−Uapishkᵘ−KakKasuak−Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve. Working under the direction of NCC’s Research, Education and Culture department, this position is responsible for maintaining a strong and solid presence in and around the Mealy Mountain National Park. This position will monitor the activities in the park with a view to honouring and protecting the cultural values of our ancestors to ensure good stewardship of our lands and waters for present and future generations.
This position is full-time seasonal with potential for recall. The anticipated duration of position is early June 2025 to late September 2025.
NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit. Role and Responsibilities
- Observe and report on activity within the park territory with consideration to environmental and cultural heritage concerns.
- Assist with stewardship initiatives.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with Parks Canada staff and government and non-government officials who regularly access the park.
- Work with NCC Environment and Natural Resources staff in executing patrols of the area.
- Operate UAV (drone) equipment to provide arial survey data and photography of remote areas.
- Work interdepartmentally with NCC staff who require assistance as it relates to the Mealy Mountain Park area.
- Identify and address challenges, proposing actionable recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Other related duties are required.
Skills and Qualifications
- Knowledge and awareness of Inuit culture, history & ways of life.
- Knowledge and awareness of regulations respecting conservation in a park area.
- Excellent local area knowledge particularly of the land in and around the park.
- Superior knowledge of local area customs, cultures and land use.
- Excellent navigation and boating skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of boating safety.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple groups.
- Excellent experience using UAV’s for data collection, photography and monitoring.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours.
- Must be able to travel with own method of transportation; and be willing and able to work in remote locations for extended periods.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Proficient in the use of UAV’s, aerial photography, and basic computer skills.
- Proficient in navigation, GPS and GIS.
- Knowledge of general and wilderness safety procedures.
Preference will be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.
