The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is accepting applications for a Community Food Support Worker in Black Tickle. Working under the direction of NCC’s Food Security Office, this position is responsible for assisting with the procurement of country food, preserving food, and facilitating community interactive activities related to food. Additionally, this role will focus on raising awareness about healthy food choices and the impact of lifestyle on health outcomes, particularly regarding diabetes awareness and reduction.

This is a temporary position from July to October.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • The Community Food Support Worker will create and enhance awareness of healthy eating and lifestyles through nutrition workshops and healthy cooking classes.
  • They will build knowledge and skills related to traditional or country food harvesting, preparation, gardening, and educating community members on the value of traditional foods.
  • The Community Food Support Worker will strengthen and expand existing community knowledge networks and connections by building and sharing information and resources.
  • The Community Food Support Worker will collaborate with the community growers’ networks; these networks will incorporate locally grown foods into traditional dishes to enhance the nutritional value of those dishes.
  • They will document traditional knowledge and ways of knowing through various methods, as well as develop and maintain records related to traditional food sovereignty.
  • Assist with stewardship initiatives.
  • Help manage the local greenhouse.
  • Assist with Learning for Life – Preventing Diabetes Project.
  • Help coordinate community food procurement, processing, preservation, and sharing events.
  • Document traditional activities using photographs and videos.
  • Help coordinate on-the-land harvesting, fishing, and/or foraging activities with youth and elders.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and awareness of Inuit culture, history & ways of life.
  • Knowledge and awareness of food safety and nutrition.
  • Knowledge and experience assisting with community-based programming.
  • Superior knowledge of local area customs, cultures and land use. 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple groups.
  • Be familiar with video and audio recording.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours.
  • Must be able to travel; and be willing and able to work in remote locations.
  • Prior experience in growing local foods and food foraging.

Education Requirements

  • Food Safety Certificate
  • Knowledge of procuring country foods, and traditional preparing and preserving techniques

Preference will be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.

Salary: Based on $44,000 per annum.
