The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is accepting applications for two temporary Fishery Sampling Steward positions: one for the Charlottetown/Pinsent’s Arm/Port Hope Simpson area and one for the Cartwright/Paradise River area. The Fishery Sampling Steward will be working to collect fish samples and document fishery-related activity within NunatuKavut. This position will report to NCC’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR).

NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who belong to south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Maintain efficient records and notes; including documenting observations of interest (i.e., Striped Bass, species at risk)
  • Travel to nearby communities to collect samples.
  • Encourage NCC members to return and assist with the collection of catch logs.
  • May assist in the distribution of communal fishing designations in the community.
  • Assist with other fishery monitoring and assessment surveys.
  • Other duties that may be related to ENR initiatives.

 Conditions of Employment

  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Must have experience traveling in boat.

 Skills and Qualifications

  • Must have good knowledge of local areas.
  • Must have good communication and organization skills.
  • Must be able to work well independently and with others.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours during the fishing season.

Education and Experience Requirements

Successful completion of post-secondary education in natural resources, environmental science or related field; OR equivalent combination of education and or experience.

Preference may be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.
