The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is seeking a motivated and community-focused youth (under 30 years of age) to join our Home Repair Program as a Housing Intern. This position plays a key role in supporting housing repair efforts across NunatuKavut territory by conducting home inspections, preparing reports, and maintaining strong client relations.

This position is full-time temporary for six months.

This is an exciting opportunity for a youth with a background in construction who is passionate about working with Indigenous communities and improving housing outcomes.

NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting pre- and post-inspections of residential homes under the Home Repair Program, ensuring work aligns with building codes, safety regulations, and construction best practices.
  • Assist with inspection and assessment reports, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with program clients, elders, and community members.
  • Maintain ongoing client relations and provide updates and support throughout the repair process.
  • Travel regularly within NunatuKavut territory.
  • Collaborate with the Home Repair Program team to ensure timely and effective delivery of services.
  • Other related duties, as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be under 30 years of age at the time of application (youth-specific opportunity).
  • Solid carpentry skills and hands-on experience with residential construction or renovations.
  • Familiarity with construction processes, building codes, and safety practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with or within Indigenous communities is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle is required.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to complete reports thoroughly.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and virtual communication platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams).

Education and Experience Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of construction processes, building codes, and safety practices. Formal training or certification in the construction trades is considered an asset, though equivalent practical experience will also be considered.

Salary: $28.00 per hour

Working Conditions

  • Must have own vehicle and be able to travel as needed; a mileage allowance or travel reimbursement will be provided.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required to accommodate community schedules.

Preference will be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.
