HAPPY VALLEY–GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, June 4, 2026 NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) President Todd Russell issued the following statement after yesterday’s announcement from the provincial government that the construction contract for a new school in Cartwright is cancelled:

“We were shocked with the news from the Province yesterday about the cancellation of the construction contract for the new school in Cartwright. At the sod turning last fall, there was so much excitement in the air. To hear about the cancellation a few months later, knowing the project will be significantly delayed, is deeply disappointing.

A new school in Cartwright is already long overdue. For years, they have needed a new structure to address urgent safety, accessibility and quality of education issues. For many, the building of this school was also an act of reconciliation. Back in 2022, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we announced Memorandum of Understanding (or MOU) on education with the Province. And in 2023, on the eve of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Province delivered an apology for their role in residential schools right here in Cartwright. At each of these historic events, promises were made that the story of NunatuKavut Inuit would be told in classrooms throughout this province. That children in schools throughout NunatuKavut could further feel a sense of pride and belonging in their Inuit identity. This school was part of that promise.

What is even more troubling is the way in which the decision was made. We understand there was no heads up that this decision was coming down nor was there an opportunity for the community or the school to have their say, creating a great amount of uncertainty. We call on Premier Wakeham and his government to work quickly to get this project back on track.

NCC will do all we can to support the community of Cartwright in helping ensure they get the school they were promised.”
