Churchill River Development

The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) firmly believes that sustainable, consensual, and inclusive resource development is essential to achieving true economic and social reconciliation. Nowhere is this more urgent than along the Churchill River, where past and ongoing developments have disregarded our rights, voices, and relationship to the land.

Our connection to this territory spans generations. The Churchill River and its watershed have long sustained our people physically, spiritually, and culturally. These lands and waters are foundational to our identity and governance as a people. With that deep responsibility, we are seeking to advance meaningful negotiations with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and other stakeholders regarding developments along the Churchill River, including Upper Churchill, Muskrat Falls, and beyond.

WE ARE CALLING FOR:

1

Reparations related to past harms caused by the Upper Churchill and Muskrat Falls developments.

2

Free, prior, and informed consent for any future development along the Churchill River and surrounding areas.

3

Formal inclusion and
representation in the 2041
Churchill Falls negotiations.

NCC is committed to a range of legal, political, and grassroots efforts to uphold the inherent rights of NunatuKavut Inuit. These efforts are rooted in our Constitution and grounded in the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

The future of the Churchill River must be shaped by those who have always belonged to it. We will not be sidelined in
decisions that impact our people, our lands, and our way of life.
