The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is accepting applications for a full-time Steward/Guardian position to be located in Cartwright, Labrador. The position will support NCC by monitoring the terrestrial and aquatic environment, including NCC’s cultural heritage sites within the Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve (AUKMMNPR). The successful candidate will work closely with both the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) and the Department of Research, Education and Culture (REC). They will also engage with NunatuKavut Inuit and Parks Canada staff to communicate and maintain NCC stewardship of the lands, ice and waters within the Park Reserve.

Starting Salary: $46,000 annually
Employment Term: ends December 20, 2024, with possibility of extension

NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit. Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will support NCC work related to the AKMMNPR and carry out the following duties:

  • Maintain a presence throughout the territory on behalf of NCC by:
    • Conducting monitoring patrols, with focus on the AUKMMNPR, including occasional multi-day/overnight trips in remote areas
    • Wearing NCC Guardian uniform in the course of duty
    • Approaching and engaging with resource users of the territory, providing information about NCC and other assistance where necessary
    • Responding to community emergencies such as oil spills and wildlife encounters that require immediate attention
  • Monitor and collect data, with special emphasis on the AUKMMNPR: 
    • Collect and record data daily, related to wildlife, fisheries and environment patrols within NunatuKavut
    • Monitor species-at-risk and other food, social, and ceremonial important species within NunatuKavut to monitor and report resource violations/infractions
    • Ensure all data is entered on a daily/weekly basis into the database and data is kept secure
    • Collect and preserve biological and environmental samples as required by NCC projects throughout the territory
    • Document information from the NCC food, social, and ceremonial harvesting
    • Assist with other monitoring and assessment surveys as required by the ENR and REC department
    • Report on results of all monitoring efforts
    • Provide weekly report summaries of all activities and duties completed
  • Respond to reports of concern:
    • Respond professionally to potential violations in an appropriate manner by approaching resource users and documenting relevant information
    • Respond to community reports regarding illegal or suspicious activities in the territory, in particular, the AUKMMNPR
  • Build and maintain relationships with NCC partners, including provincial and federal agency staff
  • Conduct community outreach and education:
    • Educate community members about the AUKMMNPR, conservation concerns, and guardian activities
    • Work to raise awareness among youth about the NCC, AUKMMNPR, conservation and guardian program and activities. Serve as a role model for youth interns and summer students
    • Work with elders to ensure transfer of knowledge across generations, especially with respect to AUKMMNPR and NunatuKavut Inuit culture and traditions
    • Help coordinate community events and celebrations such as Treaty Day, Canada’s Park Day, World Oceans Day, etc.

Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills or competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of NCC and their values
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with members and other resource users in a polite and positive manner
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, analytical skills, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated boating experience, snowmobile experience, and familiar with technology (i.e.., GPS, marine radios, satellite phones, inReach, etc.)
  • Mechanically inclined with in-board/out-board motors and snowmobile experience are an asset
  • Knowledge of local marine, freshwater, and terrestrial species
  • Knowledge of AUKMMNPR area and it’s cultural significance to NunatuKavut Inuit
  • Proficient computer skills, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and using handheld devices
  • Shows initiative and is a team player
  • Dependable, motivated, and demonstrates a strong work ethic

Conditions of Employment

  • Hold a valid Class 05 driver’s licence
  • Must be willing to travel by various means and in various weather conditions
  • Participate in training opportunities which relate to the job, the organization, and other related duties
  • Ability to work irregular work hours, including some overtime, frequent overnight trips, and work remotely for up to ten days at a time.
  • Available to assist resource technicians and other NCC staff where needed

Education and Experience Requirements

Successful completion of post-secondary education in natural resources or related field OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must also have or able to obtain security clearance for entry into a training program.

Preference may be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.
