The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is accepting applications for the position of Aquatics & Fisheries Biologist. This position will work in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) and would ideally be in one of ENR offices in southern Labrador.

NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Southern Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Project management: assist with budgeting, scheduling, coordination, and reporting of fish and aquatic studies/field programs.
    • Develop, lead, manage, and support fish, aquatic resource, and/or water quality components of projects.
  • Fieldwork: conduct research-based studies on aquatics and oceans within NunatuKavut
    • Design and implement fish (salmon, char, cod, etc.) and fish habitat field programs in freshwater and marine environments.
    • Problem solving and change management as it relates to project/field work.
    • Working collaboratively with NCC’s staff and communities.
    • Collect biological specimens to carry out potential studies.
    • Conduct acoustic and tagging surveys and inventories.
    • Purchase, maintain, and prepare equipment for fieldwork.
  • Analysis:
    • Compile, manage, analyze and interpret fish habitat, community, and biology data, and contribute to database management
    • Study various aspects of fish species such as their genetic structures, their interrelationship with other aquatic and terrestrial species.
    • Provide risk/hazard/vulnerability assessments.
    • Analyze and estimate the population of culturally important fish species within NunatuKavut.
    • Collect and analyze data from aquatic country food harvest within NunatuKavut.
    • Technical report writing and the ability to compile field data into summary reports
    • Maintaining and organizing accurate and detailed field logbooks.
  • Project development: Identify project ideas and support proposal development that respond to research needs specifically related to culturally important fish and fish habitat.
  • Reporting and other administrative duties:
    • Report on project development/timelines/outcomes to NunatuKavut Inuit and external stakeholders.
    • Contribute to the development of environment-related programs, such climate change and forestry plans within Nunatukavut.
    • Promote traditional fishing and practice conservation amongst NunatuKavut Inuit, communities, and with external partners.
  • Other duties as required by the ENR department.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience developing and managing complex projects including proposals, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with the ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, work independently with minimal supervision, and travel.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate complex ideas to audiences with varying levels of scientific literacy, including NunatuKavut Inuit, partners, community members and other interested stakeholders.
  • Experience assessing, synthesizing or analyzing information from a variety of sources (including Indigenous Knowledge) on issues related to the management or conservation of aquatics and oceans resources.
  • Experience in the preparation, writing, and leading scientific fish-related research proposals.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations, various levels of government and other non- governmental organizations
  • Experience in coordinating working teams and projects with internal or external partners. Assist in the development of junior and intermediate staff through mentorship when required.
  • Proficiency with technology including the Microsoft suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint). Experience with statistical software (eg, R) is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Competence with field equipment and logistics.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health & Safety procedures.
  • The ability to think strategically in developing novel approaches to aquatic and oceans management and mitigation is an asset.
  • Familiarity with federal and provincial acts and regulations as they pertain to the aquatic environment is an asset.
  • Experience developing and providing science-based advice for decision-making purposes is an asset.
  • Experience in development and preparation of methodology for analysis of biological samples is an asset.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Post-graduate degree from a recognized university in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position; and
  • Minimum of three years of fish and fish habitat related experience (or an acceptable combination of education and experience) working from the design stage to the reporting stage to meet specific objectives

Salary

$72,000 – $82,000 per annum

Conditions of Employment

  • Lifting of heavy objects and travel within and outside NunatuKavut by various modes of transportation, including fixed and rotary winged aircraft, snowmobiles and boats may be required;
  • Ability to work away from home for extended periods, often in a field environment with exposure to adverse weather conditions. Hours of work may include evenings and weekends; and
  • Must be comfortable working in and around water and working in all weather conditions.
  • A driver’s license and ability to provide a clean, three-year driving abstract.
  • Electrofishing training, Occupational First Aid, Swiftwater Rescue Training are assets.

Preference may be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.
