The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (NL Hydro) have signed a six-year Relationship Framework Agreement (RFA).

The RFA demonstrates a strengthened relationship between NCC and NL Hydro. It includes many shared objectives that speak to the two parties continuing to move forward in a respectful and meaningful way. It addresses areas like environmental protection, training and employment, procurement, and opportunities in the renewable energy sector for NunatuKavut businesses and NCC’s business arm Nunacor.

“NCC is looking forward to the implementation of the Relationship Framework Agreement. Nakummek to both the NCC and NL Hydro negotiating teams for reaching a strong agreement that prioritizes clean, reliable energy for NunatuKavut Inuit and communities. This is a positive step toward energy sovereignty and security in our territory,” said President Todd Russell.

The RFA includes a commitment to negotiate a project-specific agreement on a proposed new southern Labrador interconnection project to serve southern Labrador communities. This will have a direct benefit to NunatuKavut communities in the impacted area by ensuring reliable electricity supply into the future. It will also reduce the use of diesel generation while prioritizing renewable energy projects in this area.

“This agreement will advance our relationship with NL Hydro now and into future. It comes with a commitment for NL Hydro to work with NCC and Nunaor on current and future projects that provide real benefits and opportunities for our people and communities,” said President Russell.
