COVID-19 programming update
The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is pleased to be able to continue rolling out some COVID-19 supports into the first quarter of the new year. Additional funding has been secured through the Government of Canada as part of the federal Indigenous Community Support Fund. This helps NCC directly address the urgent needs of NunatuKavut members and communities as a result of the continuing impacts of COVID-19.
The latest details on our current programming is outlined below.
FOOD AND HEAT SECURITY VOUCHERS
The Food and Heat Security Voucher program is available to vulnerable populations within NCC’s membership that are experiencing challenges to food and heat security due to fixed or low income or even loss of income due to COVID-19.
The food security vouchers will be available monthly to the end of March 2023. The heat security voucher will be available for January 2023, with a possibility of extension into February and March. If you received a voucher in the fall of 2022, you will not need to reapply.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be a NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) Member
- Be at least 16 years of age living in your own household
Family gross monthly income for members up to 64 years old:
- Single: $2,000 or less a month
- Families with no dependents: $3,000 or less a month
- Families with up to two dependents: $4,000 or less a month
- Families with greater than two dependents: $4,500 or less a month
Family gross monthly income for members aged 65+:
- Single: $2,400 or less a month
- Families with no dependents: $3,600 or less a month
- Families with up to two dependents: $4,800 or less a month
- Families with greater than two dependents: $5,400 or less a month
A copy of proof of income (i.e. pay stubs) for all adults in your family MUST be provided during the approval process. Applications will not be approved without proof of income. (Note: a dependent refers to a child or adult living in the applicant’s household that the applicant supports financially).
Voucher Amounts
FOOD (per month)
Single: $150
Families with no dependents: $200
Families with up to two dependents: $250
Families with greater than two dependents: $400
HEAT (one-time)
The heat voucher is a $200 one-time flat rate amount for January 2023. Please have the account number of your heat provider handy when you call.
Food Voucher Type
Members living in Labrador will receive a gift card from a local grocery store. Members living outside Labrador will receive an electronic Walmart gift card where possible.

ELDER SUPPORT
Household Support for Seniors 60+ and adults with Disabilities
In November 2022, NCC hired workers in many NunatuKavut communities to assist seniors 60+ and adults with disabilities. These workers will continue through to the end of February 2023.
Elder support workers assist with basic tasks like:
- picking up groceries and other supplies
- picking up medications
- light yard work
- stowing wood
- light household cleaning

Physical Wellness Services
Virtual physical wellness services are available to NunatuKavut members at NO COST as part of our COVID-19 community response plan.
NCC has partnered with Garreth Kippenhuck at Inclusive Health and Fitness to deliver private or semi-private fitness training; group fitness training; and nutritional coaching.
