NEW PROGRAMMING: MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION AND HOME REPAIR

In September, we announced a number of initiatives that are being funded from an agreement with Nalcor Energy, signed in July 2019. This included development of two NCC programs that directly respond to NunatuKavut Inuit needs and priorities.

The Medical Transportation Program, with a budget of $1.75 million for one year, will provide resources to assist with medical travel for NunatuKavut members. The Home Repair Program, with a budget of $1.25 million for one year, will provide funding assistance for individual home repair in NunatuKavut communities.

The terms and conditions for both programs have been approved by NCC’s Governing Council and program staff are currently being put in place. We anticipate rolling out these programs in January 2020. Stay tuned for further announcements on how to access these two important programs early in the new year.

ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY (AGA)

Our AGA has been rescheduled to January 24-25, 2020 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Our theme is “Growing Stronger Together.”

The meeting portion of the AGA will take place at the College of the North Atlantic. Registration starts at 3:30 p.m. on January 24, followed by a meet and greet at 5:00 p.m. The AGA will begin at 6:30 p.m. that evening.

A closing banquet and dance, sponsored by NDC Fisheries, will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 51 on January 25. Award-winning Inuk artist Susan Aglukark will deliver a special keynote address at the banquet. This will be for ticket holders only; separate tickets will be issued at the AGA.

Our AGA is open to NunatuKavut members, delegates and guests. If you are planning to attend, we ask that you register online at nunatukavutaga.eventbrite.ca. If you previously registered for the November AGA dates, you will need to fill out a new registration form at the link above.

Please note that registering online does not mean you are considered a community delegate with expenses covered by NCC. These delegates were already chosen at the AGA community meetings in October.

NCC GENERAL ELECTION

NCC’s next general election for our Governing Council will be taking place in the spring of 2020. An election date will be called in the new year.

In preparation for the election, members are encouraged to ensure that your contact information is up to date and accurate. Please get in touch with our Membership Clerk at membership@nunatukavut.ca or at 709-896-0592, ext. 242 with any updates.
