Message of Condolence on the passing of Brian Mulroney

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney. Throughout his lifetime in politics, and as Prime Minister, Mulroney made an indelible impact on people across the country. He did not shy away from bold action, he led by example and worked across divides toward his vision of progress.

We will remember Prime Minister Mulroney for his ability to build working relationships between those who hold different beliefs, driven by his commitment to creating a better future. We will continue to look to his history as an example of boldly taking the path less travelled. He was an early leader in environmental protection and climate action, which remains a critical commitment today. In his legacy, we pledge to continue to work together to protect the health and future of people and the environment alike.

As Prime Minister, he led a government that was open to advancing the recognition and rights of Indigenous people, and engaged with Indigenous organizations to advance a variety of novel agreements. Despite the ramifications of the Oka crisis, Mulroney’s work to engage with Indigenous groups set an important precedent of collaboration and consultation that remains to this day.

The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) received significant support under his administration, which undoubtedly contributed to the development and strength of our organization and community. We remain committed to building relationships across divides as the only way to truly lift each other up, as he did throughout his life.

On behalf of NCC and our Governing Council, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Mulroney’s family, friends and colleagues. May your memories of him and the tremendous legacy he has left behind provide you comfort during this time.”
