NunatuKavut Community Council welcomes new federal ministers after recent cabinet shuffle
HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, July 28, 2023 – NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) President Todd Russell issued the following statement in response to this week’s federal Cabinet shuffle by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:
“We are very hopeful with this new Cabinet and trust that each Minister will work hard to further their government’s commitment to Indigenous reconciliation and important issues like climate change. We look forward to a first meeting with Ministers taking on new portfolios in departments that play a significant role in helping advance the rights and priorities of NunatuKavut Inuit. This includes Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Gary Anandasangaree and Justice Minister Arif Virani, along with Health Minister Mark Holland, National Defence Minister Bill Blair and Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dianne Lebouthillier, among others.
NCC also looks forward to strengthening our relationships with Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu, Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault, Northern Affairs Minister Dan Vandal, and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, who each stayed within their portfolio, along with Ministers Seamus O’Regan (Labour and Seniors) and Minister Gudie Hutchings (Rural Economic Development and responsible for Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) from our province. We also send our appreciation to Ministers who are moving on to new portfolios or who have left Cabinet to retire from public service. The new federal cabinet list is in ANNEX A.
NunatuKavut Inuit would like to see meaningful and tangible movement in many areas, including progress on our rights and recognition process, access to critical health benefits, a continued emphasis on climate change and improvements in Search and Rescue services in our territory and across Labrador.”
