It will assist communities and groups celebrate and commemorate the British-Inuit Treaty of 1765 on or around August 21, 2021. Any events, activities or initiatives must promote the overall well-being, history and culture of NunatuKavut Inuit.
Background
The George Roberts Community Grants Program was established in December 2013. It is named after the late George Roberts, a proud NCC member from Norman Bay, Labrador, whose years of volunteering and commitment contributed to the betterment of his community and the communities of others.
Treaty Day is celebrated on August 21 to commemorate the British-Inuit Treaty of 1765. This was an important agreement to find peace and protect our rights to self-government, harvest of wildlife and natural resources and commercial right of trade. As beneficiaries of this Treaty, NunatuKavut Inuit remain deeply connected to the land, waters and ice that surround us. This includes our rich marine resources, which are integral to our way of being. Today, we celebrate this Treaty that recognized and protected our rights as Inuit over 250 years ago.
