Statement: Todd Russell re-elected as President of NunatuKavut
HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, September 2, 2020 – The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) today announced that Todd Russell was re-elected as President by acclamation. This followed last night’s release of the official 2020 general election nomination results. NCC also welcomes four other nominated candidates who were elected by acclamation to sit on the Governing Council, all of whom are incumbents.
President Russell made the following statement on his re-election:
“I am humbled and grateful for the time and space to continue this incredible journey that the Inuit of NunatuKavut are on together. We have collectively felt and seen the tangible impacts of a people who are stronger and more confident. We have a deep and unwavering connection to our lands, ice and water, and to one another and the places to which we belong. And we continue to strengthen the bonds of our many kinships and relationships, from our people and families to our communities and all levels of government. We are optimistic about the future and the great promise that it holds for us and for the many others that call this place home. I look forward to working with other Indigenous leaders, the new Premier, our colleagues in Ottawa and the many that walk with us on this journey.
I congratulate my fellow Councillors who were elected by acclamation and will be returning to the Governing Council table. And we await the results of the election on September 29 and the inaugural meeting of our new Governing Council. Many thanks to our people, supporters and those with whom we are in relationship. And an immense thanks, as well, to the talented, dedicated and caring team at the NunatuKavut Community Council and Nunacor. There is much work to be done and together much will be accomplished. Nakummek.”
