Nunatukavut

The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is seeking applications for a Research Associate. The Research Associate is responsible for supporting knowledge mobilization and information-gathering efforts related to NunatuKavut Inuit use and occupancy in and around south and central Labrador. The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative team to organize, document, review, and analyze relevant data and literature, contributing to the broader strategic objectives of NCC’s research and governance activities.

This will be a part-time contract for approximately six months, with the possibility of extension.

Scope of Work

Part of this work will require collaboration with team members on this portfolio, as well as independent work including but not limited to the following:

  • Identify and compile existing internal NCC data related to NunatuKavut Inuit land use and occupancy in central and southern Labrador.
  • Identify and evaluate relevant publicly available data sources, including academic, government, and community-based research.
  • Conduct environmental scans, literature reviews, and develop summary reports and briefing documents.
  • Analyze public documents, policy papers, and government reports relevant to land use, resource development, and Indigenous rights in Labrador.
  • Contribute to the development, coordination, and analysis of ongoing research projects.
  • Assist in organizing meetings, interviews, and other research logistics, including liaising with internal staff, partners, and community members.

The successful proponent will be responsible for equipment necessary to participate in virtual meetings and working group activities. Confidentiality will be required and all material developed as part of this contract will be the property of NCC and remain with NCC staff. Any travel required will be compensated according to NCC rates and not included in the pay.

Key Qualifications and Competencies

  • Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, sociology, Indigenous studies, or a related discipline OR an undergraduate degree in a related field with demonstrated experience in applied research and report writing.
  • Experience working with or in Indigenous communities, preferably in Labrador or similar northern contexts.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous land use and occupancy studies and issues is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with NunatuKavut Inuit culture, history, and governance is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.

What We Offer

  • This is a part-time contractual position at a rate of $30/hour for 20 hours per week.
  • The contract will be for 6 months and reassessed upon completion.
  • Reporting directly to the Internal RIRSD Team, this position will work remotely with some travel required.
  • Successful applicant will attend virtual meetings and require use of personal laptop.
