Nunatukavut

This year, the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area (MPA) celebrates 20 years of protecting one of Labrador’s most remarkable marine ecosystems. Established in 2005 through a partnership between the NunatuKavut Community Council, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and local residents, Gilbert Bay is one of Canada’s oldest MPAs and an early example of community-driven conservation in action.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area (GBMPA), we’re pleased to share the launch of our interactive Story Map!

The Story Map builds awareness of the ecological significance of Gilbert Bay, and the conservation efforts underway to protect this area.

What you’ll find in the Story Map

  • An interactive map of Gilbert Bay and the protected zones within the MPA
  • Key ecological information: habitat types, cod behaviour, marine life and sea-floor features

  • Insights into ongoing management: how the MPA is governed, how traditional knowledge and science come together
