The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is accepting applications for a Community Champion in Cartwright. Working under the direction of NCC’s Food Security Office and in partnership with the Health and Community Services department, this position is responsible for assisting with the Learning for Life – Preventing Diabetes Project.

This is a temporary position from mid-June to mid-September. 

The Community Champion will work to raise community awareness about diabetes, the risk factors for diabetes, and how lifestyle choices affect diabetes outcomes. The program will incorporate traditional lifestyles, traditional knowledge related to food procurement, processing, and preparation, with an aim of promoting Type 2 Diabetes prevention and management.

NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Partner with neighbouring growing networks that help manage local greenhouses in planning activities and connecting with community members.
  • Work with the community growers’ networks; these networks will incorporate locally grown foods in traditional dishes that enhance the dish’s nutritional value.
  • Document traditional knowledge and ways of knowing through video recordings, documentation and photographs, as well as develop and maintain records of outcomes related to traditional food sovereignty.  
  • Assist with stewardship initiatives.
  • Help manage the local greenhouse.
  • Assist with Learning for Life – Preventing Diabetes Project.
  • Help coordinate community food procurement, processing, preserving and sharing events.
  • Record traditional activities using photographs and videos.
  • Help coordinate on-the-land harvesting/fishing and/or foraging activities with youth and elders.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and awareness of Inuit culture, history & ways of life.
  • Knowledge and awareness of food safety and nutrition.
  • Knowledge and experience assisting with community-based programing.
  • Superior knowledge of local area customs, cultures and land use. 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple groups.
  • Be familiar with video and audio recording.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours.
  • Must be able to travel, and be willing and able to work in remote locations.
  • Prior experience in growing local foods and food foraging.

Education Requirements

  • Food Safety Certificate
  • Knowledge of procuring country foods, and traditional preparing and preserving techniques

Preference will be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.

Salary: Based on $44,000 per annum.
