The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Officer to assist in the coordination of research related to community-based projects, including the integration of Inuit knowledge within resource and energy development projects. This part-time position will also contribute to general departmental research initiatives, including supporting NCC’s research governance processes and research review. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of meaningful, community-driven research that builds capacity and supports sustainable development in NunatuKavut. This position is part-time, to March 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension.

NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the research that will inform a community-based wood sharing program, grounded in Inuit knowledge systems and community values.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret qualitative and/or quantitative data to explore local needs, sustainability issues and energy alternatives.
  • Collaborate with Inuit knowledge holders and community members to ensure traditional knowledge is respectfully incorporated into research activities.
  • Assist in the review and assessment of internal and external research applications as part of NCC’s research governance process.
  • Conduct literature reviews, environmental scans and best practice research in relevant areas of community interest.
  • Write and contribute to research reports, briefing notes, and presentations for a range of audiences.
  • Develop and write funding proposals and assist in identifying and pursuing relevant funding opportunities to support departmental research and community-based initiatives.
  • Liaise with partners, stakeholders, and other departments to support broader research and capacity-building goals.
  • Ensure all research activities align with ethical protocols and community research standards.
  • Other related duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of Inuit knowledge systems and ways of knowing.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous and social science research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of energy/resource development issues and community sustainability planning.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including report writing and presenting research findings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse communities and stakeholders.
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Detail-oriented, dependable, and responsive to community priorities.
  • Comfortable working with budgets.
  • Proficiency in standard computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office).
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Experience with geographic information systems would be an asset.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A post-secondary degree (a graduate degree is an asset) in social sciences, environmental studies, Indigenous studies, or another related field.
  • Experience in applied or community-based research, especially within Indigenous contexts.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Salary

Based on qualifications, S72,000 – 88,000 per annum
