The NunatuKavut Community Council’s (NCC) Department of Environment and Natural Resources is accepting applications for a full-time Environment and Natural Resources Resource Technician based in Port Hope Simpson.
The candidate will actively seek and participate in fieldwork opportunities that advance capacity building within NunatuKavut, with a focus on the management, adaptation, conversation and protection of fish and fish habitat.
NunatuKavut means “our ancient land” and refers to the territory of Inuit who reside primarily in south and central Labrador. NCC is a rights-based governing body that represents NunatuKavut Inuit.

Roles and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will support the ENR Department and carry out the following duties:
- Co-lead field and desktop research, surveys, monitoring programs, and land use assessments within and adjacent to NunatuKavut, in collaboration with NCC staff, Guardians, communities, and external partners
- Plan, coordinate, and engage NunatuKavut Inuit in the monitoring, collection, and analysis of fish, aquatic habitat, watershed, marine ecosystem, and harvest data, ensuring the integration of Indigenous Knowledge and Western science methods
- Assist in gathering and integrating NunatuKavut Inuit Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Ecological Knowledge into environmental monitoring, research, and stewardship initiatives
- Develop and implement monitoring protocols, and assist in coordinating and delivering environmental monitoring programs, including annual aquatic invasive species and water temperature monitoring
- Collect, manage, analyze, and maintain environmental monitoring data, and prepare reports and presentations to communicate findings to NunatuKavut communities, partners, and funding agencies
- Prepare meeting notes, correspondence, reports, proposals, and other documentation related to ENR programs
- Support the development of project proposals, program strategies, and initiatives related to aquatic and ocean assessments, habitat protection and rehabilitation, climate change impacts, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship
- Organize and participate in community meetings, workshops, and outreach events to promote awareness of fish, fish habitat, Species at Risk, traditional fishing practices, and environmental stewardship within NunatuKavut
- Support collaboration with government, Indigenous organizations, researchers, and partners on initiatives
- Build and maintain networks and communication platforms, including social media and community outreach, to support conservation and stewardship efforts
- Maintain field equipment and ensure its safe operation
- Provide logistical, technical, and operational support to ENR programs and projects, including preparing weekly activity reports and supporting project coordination and implementation
- Perform other related duties as required
Skills and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Strong knowledge and understanding of NCC, NunatuKavut Inuit culture, and community values
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with community members, partners, stakeholders, and resource users
- Solid organizational, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills
- Knowledge of local fish and wildlife species and habitats within NunatuKavut
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Experience operating boats, snowmobiles, and field equipment
- Ability to use navigational tools such as GPS units, maps, and charts
- Mechanical skills, including experience maintaining inboard and outboard motors, ATVs, snowmobiles, and other field equipment (considered an asset)
- Ability to work in remote environments and travel for extended periods in varying conditions
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs in field environments
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), as well as experience using handheld field devices and data collection technology
- Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, and teamwork
- Strong work ethic and commitment to environmental stewardship
Conditions of Employment
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence
- Willingness to travel to various locations, including remote and wilderness areas, for extended periods
- Commitment to training and professional development aligned with the position and organizational priorities
- Ability to work flexible and irregular hours, including overtime, frequent overnight travel, and extended remote field deployments, particularly during peak field seasons
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs
- Adherence to all organizational health and safety policies and procedures, with a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices in both office and field environments
Education and Experience Requirements
Successful completion of post-secondary education in natural resources or a related field; an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.
Preference will be given to qualified members of NunatuKavut Community Council.
Employment Term: Up to March 26, 2027, with the possibility of extension.
Salary Range: $54,000 – $65,000 per annum, depending on qualifications.
