The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) is seeking a dedicated MPA Event Coordinator to join our team. Reporting to the Manager of Natural Resources, the ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in supporting the Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) Team in planning and executing a memorable celebration for the 20th anniversary of the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area that highlights the MPA’s conservation achievements and fosters community engagement. This is a one-year, full-time position, beginning January 6, 2025, ending December 19, 2025, with no possibility for extension. This in-office position is located at the ENR Aquatic Resource Centre in Port Hope Simpson, Labrador.

Roles and Responsibilities for MPA Event Coordinator

  • Coordinate the anniversary celebration highlighting the MPA’s conservation achievements and fostering community engagement.
    • Educate participants on marine conservation, reinforcing the MPA’s mission throughout the celebration.
    • Plan event activities and coordinate logistics, including permits, equipment rentals, catering, and partnerships with local vendors, to ensure seamless operations.
    • Engage stakeholders such as local government, conservation organizations, sponsors, and volunteers to promote the event and secure resources.
    • Evaluate the event’s impact and report on its success relevant to the MPA’s goals.
  • Host community information events.
  • Liaison with the Communications Department with the marketing and outreach campaign across social media, local media, and community networks to attract attendees.
  • Manage project budget, including identification of priorities, and reviewing operating expenditures.
  • Manage vendor contract for goods and services according to guidelines acting as primary point of contact for contractors, vendors, and agencies working on projects
  • Provide technical support on RFPs and tenders for goods and services.
  • Maintain a safe work environment. 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience in a non-profit or public sector setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Marine Protected Areas an asset, particularly, the Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Area.
  • Understanding of ecosystems, Species at Risk, and marine climate issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively build positive relationships and collaborate in cross-functional, diverse teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong project management skills, including budget and resource management.
  • Experience working with Indigenous populations, particularly in a northern context, is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Contract management skills an asset.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel), design software platforms, social media networks, and other relevant software.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence and a clean driving record are required.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and occasionally work outdoors in cold temperatures.
  • Physically fit to walk on rough, uneven terrain in various climates.
  • Availability for overnight travel, often in remote locations.
  • Knowledge/experience with Marine Protected Areas.
  • Basic First Aid certification.

Education

  • Post-secondary education in Project Management or Natural Resources, or a combination of relevant experience and certifications.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a project coordinator role, preferably in event coordination or with knowledge/experience in Marine Protected Areas.

Salary Scale: $52,000-62,000
