HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, APRIL 2, 2026 – NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) President Todd Russell, along with Governing Councillor Hughlett Williams and NCC officials, attended an announcement yesterday at 5 Wing Goose Bay. The Department of National Defence (DND) announced investments for the Wing that total up to a substantial $8 billion as one of Canada’s NORAD northern-based infrastructure (NNBI) sites.

“This area will play a huge role in contributing to the safety and security of this country, including Arctic sovereignty,” said President Russell. “We have appreciated our engagement with DND to date and look forward to continuing to build on our positive relationship with them. The voices and perspectives of our people must be reflected in discussions and decisions that will have impacts on our way of life and our lands and waters.”

If done right, the expansion of 5 Wing Goose Bay will also mean significant business and employment opportunities for the area.

“NCC, along with our business arm Nunacor, is working diligently to ensure that our people and communities, who are among those most impacted by the expansion at 5 Wing, will share in the full socioeconomic benefits that this project will accrue,” concluded President Russell.
