Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL — August 17, 2026 — The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) President Todd Russell issued the following statement regarding the recent Innu Nation election results:

“On behalf of the NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC), I offer my congratulations to Grand Chief Jodie Ashini and the newly elected leadership of the Innu Nation,” said NCC President Todd Russell. “I had the privilege of working alongside her late father, Daniel Ashini, who negotiated tirelessly for Innu rights and stood as a powerful voice for his people, their lands and their future. His dedication leaves an inspiring legacy, and I know Grand Chief Ashini brings her own strength, experience and deep commitment to Innu culture, history and rights as she begins this mandate.”

NCC recognizes the vital importance of strong Indigenous leadership in Labrador and the shared responsibility to foster respectful relationships, meaningful dialogue and a brighter future for all residents.

“We look forward to working constructively with Grand Chief Ashini and the Innu Nation on matters of mutual interest, guided by respect, understanding and a shared dedication to the peoples of Labrador,” added President Russell.
