Nunatukavut

The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) today announced that Todd Russell was re-elected as President by acclamation. This followed the release of the official 2024 general election nomination results last evening. NCC also welcomes the following nominated candidates who were elected by acclamation to sit on the Governing Council: Dexter Flynn, Councillor for Area 1: Straits; and Jessie Tobin, Councillor for Area 5: Western Labrador (incumbent).

President Russell made the following statement on his re-election:

“Ullukut. Good day. I am both humbled and grateful to be able to continue this journey of self-determination with you, with all NunatuKavut Inuit, whether in the homeland or elsewhere. It is truly a privilege and an honour to represent such a resilient people, and a people who are still on and connected to their lands and waters. A people who are known for our caring and sharing ways.

We have faced challenges and we have not been diminished. We have instead been emboldened. We have also celebrated many successes and witnessed remarkable progress together. Our governance, your governance, is strong and our people are strong. We will continue to remain focussed on ensuring our rights are respected and recognized in all areas. We will continue to seek opportunities that ensures our communities are healthy and sustainable. We will focus on efforts that advance a rising NunatuKavut. I look forward to strengthening our relationships with other Indigenous groups, with all levels of government (municipally, provincially and federally), with industry and with the many people that walk with us on this journey. They are so important to our progress.

I congratulate my fellow Councillors who were elected by acclamation, those returning and new, to the Governing Council table. I also send out best wishes for a good campaign to those who are running to be elected on November 7.

Nakummesuak to each and everyone of you for your support and encouragement over the years. It has been tremendous and deeply appreciated. I also sincerely thank our entire team at the NunatuKavut Community Council and Nunacor for their dedication and commitment to our people and the work we do. There is lots of great work to be done and, together, much will be accomplished.”
